After the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty in Iran in 1979 an era of totalitarianism and religious intolerance gripped that ancient land.
In September 2022 Mahsa Amini was arrested in Tehran by the regime’s so-called Morality Police – who routinely arrest, detain and torture women and girls for not complying with discriminating veiling laws. Mahsa was viciously beaten while she was forcibly transferred to Vozara detention centre. Within hours she was transferred to Kasra Hospital after she’d fallen into a coma. She died three days later. In the ensuing protests over 500 people were killed by police, including women and 68 children.
Trauma by Mehrnoosh Khorsand is set against the backdrop of gross human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings by the Tehran regime. Leila, a young refugee from Iran is in a London hospital – traumatised and hallucinating. Separated from her young daughter, Leila’s trauma manifests through a disconnect between her reality as a patient under observation in a mental health ward and past events in Iran. She struggles to tell the difference between her hallucinations and reality – unsure if she’ll find her young daughter. She’s unsure too if she can trust anyone – or if she can finally break free of the bonds of a grotesque oppression.
