Adi Gortler & Hamza Ali

Adi Gortler and Hamza Ali sit with their backs against a white wall, smiling at the viewer.

Adi and Hamza, who met during their MFA at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, have years of experience using movement to explore cultural heritage and identity in the British Muslim and Jewish diasporas.

Adi Gortler is a London-based movement director and teacher, trained in London and Tel Aviv. Her work blends theatre, performance arts, and various physical techniques. Hamza Ali is an interdisciplinary movement artist who blends physical theatre with other forms to create, direct, facilitate, and perform movement.

During their residency, they’ll be working on a movement-based performance which explores the significance of water in Jewish and Muslim cultures, focusing on ritual practices. The project highlights the beauty in cultural similarities and differences through movement. With support from artsdepot, the creators will engage with Jewish and Muslim communities in Barnet, using their voices to shape the work. The aim is to capture diverse perspectives on water, spanning age, orthodoxy, secularity, and gender.

This residency is supported in collaboration with Tsitsit Fringe Festival 2024
